How to match traffic survey types to planning questions — and why AI-based methods extend survey coverage.

Transportation planning depends on accurate, current traffic data — volume, classification, movement patterns, speed — collected through structured surveys rather than assumption or data that’s grown stale. A road-widening decision, a signal-timing redesign, or a new bypass route all rest on survey data being both accurate and recent; get either wrong and the resulting infrastructure decision inherits the error.

Traditional survey methods rely on manual counters standing at a location with a tally sheet or clicker, or roadside interviews for origin-destination studies. Both approaches work, but both are inherently limited — a counter can only work a shift before fatigue affects accuracy, and staffing multiple locations simultaneously for an extended study gets expensive fast.

AI-based survey methods replace manual counting with camera-based data collection, extending both survey duration and coverage without proportionally scaling field staff. A study that would need a rotating team of counters for a week can run continuously from a fixed camera for the same period, with consistent methodology throughout.

Good survey planning starts with matching the survey type to the actual planning question: volume studies (CVC) for capacity assessment, turning-movement studies (TMC) for junction and signal design, spot speed studies for setting speed limits, origin-destination studies for corridor and network planning. Picking the wrong survey type for the question wastes the entire study, however well it’s executed.
